Privacy Policy

Last updated April 4, 2026

Short version: we collect the minimum data needed to run the service, we don't sell it, and we don't use it for advertising.

1. Who we are

EthosBar is a macOS menu bar application that monitors the status pages of developer services. It is operated independently. If you have questions about this policy, contact us at hello@ethosbar.app.

2. What we collect

We collect only what is necessary to operate the app and validate licenses. Here is everything, with no omissions:

  • Device IDA UUID generated on first launch and stored in UserDefaults. It is never tied to your Apple ID, name, or any device identifier provided by the OS. It exists solely to bind a license key to one machine.
  • Email addressCollected if you join the waitlist or activate a Pro license. Optional in both cases. Used to send license confirmation and, in future, account-related notices.
  • IP addressLogged at the moment of license activation or re-activation. Stored in our activation log for fraud detection (e.g. the same key being activated from many different IPs in a short window).
  • App versionSent to our version-check endpoint on launch so we can determine whether to show an update notice. Not stored.
  • License keyThe key you enter during activation. Stored in association with your device ID and email.

We do not collect crash reports, analytics events, screen recordings, keystroke data, or any information about which services you monitor.

3. How we use it

  • License validation: confirming your key is valid, active, and bound to your device.
  • Fraud prevention: detecting key sharing or automated activation abuse via IP and device signals.
  • Service operation: the app fetches aggregated service status data from our Cloudflare proxy. No personal data is involved in that request.
  • Version checks: determining if a newer version of EthosBar is available.

We do not use your data for advertising, behavioural profiling, or any purpose beyond the above.

4. Third-party services

Running EthosBar involves four third-party providers. Each has their own privacy policy:

  • Firebase (Google)Firestore is used as our database. Device IDs, email addresses, license keys, and activation logs are stored here. Firebase is GDPR-compliant and offers data processing agreements. Data is stored in the United States.
  • VercelHosts the EthosBar website and API routes. Standard request logs (IP, user agent, path) are retained by Vercel per their data retention policy.
  • CloudflareOur status proxy backend runs on Cloudflare Workers. Status fetch requests pass through Cloudflare infrastructure. No personal data is transmitted in these requests.
  • PolarHandles payment processing for Pro licenses. When you purchase, you interact directly with Polar's checkout. We receive a license key and order confirmation, but not your full payment details. Polar is the merchant of record.

5. Data retention

Activation records and user documents are retained for as long as your license is active. Waitlist entries are kept until the list is used for its intended purpose or you ask us to remove your email. To request deletion of any data associated with your device ID or email, contact us at hello@ethosbar.app and we will remove it within 14 days.

6. Cookies and tracking

The EthosBar macOS app does not use cookies. The ethosbar.app website uses no advertising cookies and no cross-site tracking. We do not run Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or any equivalent tracking script. Firebase Analytics is configured but not actively used to track individual users.

7. Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you. To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@ethosbar.app. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to what we collect or how we use it, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where feasible, notify active users via an in-app notice. Continued use of EthosBar after a policy update constitutes acceptance.
